Are you entering So You Think You’re Funny or any other comedy competitions in 2023?Two industry professionals, comedian Mike Gunn and SYTYF producer Julia Chamberlin, are offering a Zoom class on how to excel in comedy competitions.Julia Chamberlin has been the producer of SYTYF since 2003. What she doesn’t know about comedy competitions isn’t worth knowing. It means I see approximately 250 new acts per year for the competition and have contact with 100 more. I organise approximately 30 showcases for the first round of the competition, go to all of them, then program the seven semi-finals and final. I also scout shows for Gilded Balloon, comedy and theatre.I’ve been a reviewer for Chortle since about 2004, but I’m nicer about people now, I don’t give an opinion.I booked club comedy from 1998 - 2018 (not just Jongleurs, but Red Rose, Hampstead, Brixton C.C and Munich’s English-Speaking Comedy club for a while.)I’ve judged Newbury New Act comp, Bath New Act of the Year comp a couple of times, Komedia Brighton New Act comp, Chortle Student Comedian of the Year Final, Leicester Square Sketch Comedy of the Year, Scottish Comedian of the Year, Irish Comedian of the Year, English Comedian of the Year, Raw Comedy state finals in Australia and probably others I’ve completely forgotten about.I’m passionate about helping acts who want to be helped.Mike GunnI have been a full-time stand-up comedian and Comedy Store regular for 25 years. In 2018 I was a judge for British stand-up comedian of the year.
