About the Organisers: NextUp
At NextUp, our mission is to amplify the power of comedy whilst supporting comedians and the wider comedy community in as many ways as possible. We primarily do this through our subscription-video-on-demand platform dubbed ‘The Netflix of UK stand-up’ by Engadget but since COVID-19, we’ve also run the following initiatives:

  • A Just Giving fundraising campaign to financially support comedians who need it most. At the time of writing it’s raised over £100,000.

  • A live-streaming service called NextUp Now that gives comedians a virtual live-streaming stage to perform and earn revenue from.

  • Doubling our commission payouts to any venue or comedian who promotes our video subscription service, helping them earn easy additional revenue.

  • Ticketed live gigs via Zoom (like this one) that present comedians a ‘closed-door’ comedy club-like scenario to practice their material and earn revenue from.

It’s going to be a while before live comedy returns to its normal state but we’re determined in the meantime to create a working model that benefits everyone and we’d like to thank you for your supporting this festival, and live comedy.

The crowdwork thing makes it better than a basic youtube show.

Rachel C reviewed Anna Mann // The NextUp Comedy Festival - Show 10 which happened on 8:00pm on Fri 10th Jul 2020.

Anna Mann was absolutely amazing! What a wonderful treat for a Friday evening ❤️ The way she engaged with her guests & made everyone feel welcome was everything I had hoped for. Loved seeing the audience and people’s faces...something you wouldn’t actually experience in a normal show. You didn’t have to have your camera on, so for the shy guests who didn’t want their faces on show this was an option. I would pay to see her again and again! Loved all her stories and although I have heard some of them before, her unique style brought back happy memories of the past and her glamorous but could we say somewhat frivolous & possibly sordid past. A true icon ❤️

Susi Mae W reviewed Jessica Fostekew // The NextUp Comedy Festival - Show 7 which happened on 8:00pm on Tue 7th Jul 2020.

I get why audience microphones were encouraged to be switched on, but I don't need to hear other people chewing. The constant audience interjection (which seemed to mainly be friends of the organisers?) was unfunny, intrusive, and wasted about 20 minutes out of a one-hour show. It made the experience feel like being on the outside of a smug high-school clique with in-jokes. I could pay less than 9 pounds to sit in a pub and listen to the conversations on the next table and have just about the same amount of fun. I was so incredibly disappointed because I love Jess and Hench was the funniest thing I'd seen for years. This was rubbish though, through no fault of Jess herself.
